Heidelberg Youth Prevention and Recovery Care (YPARC)
The care centre viewed from its front entrace
YPARC is a new youth healthcare facility providing treatment and support to those living in Melbourne’s north-east. Supply of doors & frames to this build met the need for fitting of specialist door hardware.
Healthcare Covered
Our client SJ Higgins Group was looking to fit out the facility with Flush Panel and Fire-Rated Doors to address the specific function of each door throughout the building. All doors were made-to-order doors with a variety of configurations including single-leaf, pair-leaf, and riser doors. Among these were standard swing door sets, cat-and-kitten sets with a single active leaf, as well as doors featuring additional components like overlights and sidelights. Pressed Metal Frames were manufactured for seamless pairing with each door leaf for a comprehensive door set solution.
Preparation + Protection
Specialised hardware was fitted to a number of door sets in the YPARC facility. Door manufacture was completed with this hardware in mind as Spence prepared the hardware cutouts in the doors and frames. The particular models of selected hardware were input into our CNC router machine. This made for precise preparations to be made in place of timely on-site labour. This included rebated meeting stiles (pictured left) for sealing of pair doors, vision panel core cutouts (pictured middle) for visibility between spaces, and frame preparation for electrical strikes. Common hardware such as Door Closers were also fitted in a variety of configurations spanning face-mounting, recessed fitting, and even bottom-of-door fitting.
Measures were taken to protect the doors against risk of damage. High-risk and high-traffic doors were finished with a high-pressure laminate which protects against scratches and impact damage. Certain doors also featured PVC Edge Strips (pictured right) along their vertical edges as a further protectant against damage from the likes of slamming. These Edge Strips also safeguard the laminated face from peeling at its edges over time.
Inside & Out
Spence also handled the supply of select external door sets. These were specially built for outdoor conditions and the associated exposure to moisture. Ply doors skins were fitted for their natural moisture-resistant properties that deter warping and deformation.
The entry door to the switch room (pictured right) was metal clad and capped for complete protection. An unsheltered door such as this is subject to climate conditions give its direct exposure to the rain and sun. The capping along its perimeter encases the door to disallow contact with external elements like moisture. The rear entry door (pictured bottom) was fitted with kick plates along the bottom section of the doors' faces. This plating is an effective measure against impact risk to extend the lifespan of the door's functionality as well as deter visual degradation.
A Specialty Build
Many of the building's doors were installed with fit-for-purpose hinges (pictured left) for the protection of consumers. Door leaves were constructed to the appropriate thickness to fit these hinges and cutouts were made for easy installation. The facility also features non-standard swing function door sets. The central toilet/bathroom door (pictured right) was fitted with a double-action pivot door with all preparations completed by Spence for the non-standard pivot hinge to be installed. These non-standard door functions and hardware fittings are indicative of the specialty healthcare requirements with which we are experienced.
A Community Project
The addition of the Heidelberg Youth Prevention and Recovery Care provides a space for young people experiencing mental health challenges to access developmentally appropriate treatment, care and support, closer to home. It is rewarding for us at Spence Doors to have played a role alongside SJ Higgins Group in the construction of such a project. The range of specialty hardware preparations and protective measures required made for a highly custom doors package for us to accommodate.
