What makes a fire door compliant in Australia?

Fire safety – including fire doors – for commercial and industrial premises in Australia is mandated under the National Construction Code (NCC) as well as state and territory regulations. The NCC requires the use of fire doors to slow the spread of fire and protect occupants.

Failure to comply with the NCC’s fire safety mandates can result in substantial financial penalties and invalidation of insurance policies. Building owners and facility managers are legally required to ensure that all passive fire protection systems, such as metal clad doors and metal door frames, are maintained and compliant at all times to meet their duty of care.

The importance of correct installation of fire doors

Proper installation of fire doors is just as important as choosing the correct fire rated door for your building. Incorrect installation can hinder evacuation in a fire, allow a fire to spread more rapidly, and even invalidate insurance policies. Fire door installation regulations are set out by Australian Standards AS1905.1 and AS1530.4, and NCC requirements.

Correct installation of commercial and industrial fire doors includes:

• The door, frame and hardware must all be fire-rated and tested, including wall fasteners.
• The gap tolerance between the frame and the wall must be ≤ 10 mm, filled with approved fire-rated sealant or mortar.
• No unapproved drilling or cutting is to take place at any point of installation, including post-install.
• Every fire door must display a permanent compliance tag with details of the manufacturer, Fire Resistance Level (FRL), year of manufacture, and certification number.
