Heidelberg Youth Prevention and Recovery Care (YPARC)

A mental health rehabilitation facility for youth. A wide variety of door types fulfil the personal safety and fire protection needs of the centre.

YPARC is a new youth healthcare facility servicing the Melbourne community. Our supply of doors and frames to this build was subject to the required specialised door hardware and the construction of doors with personal safety in mind.

Healthcare Covered

Meeting the specialised door set health and safety needs of a recovery care centre was Spence's role in the project. Our client SJ Higgins was looking to fit out the facility with Flush Panel and Fire-Rated Doors alike to address the specific function of room/compartment separation that each door would serve. Configurations of made-to-order doors varied with the specification of single-leaf and pair-leaf door sets, and riser doors. Among these were standard swing sets, cat-and-kitten sets with a single active leaf, as well as sets featuring additional components like overlights/sidelights. Pressed Metal Frames were manufactured for seamless pairing with each door leaf for a comprehensive door set solution.

Preparation + Protection

A series of specialised hardware were fitted to door sets all throughout the YPARC facility. Door manufacture was completed with this hardware in mind as Spence prepared required cutouts in the door leafs and frames. The specific selected hardware was input into our CNC router machine for precise and efficient preparations to be made in place of timely on-site labour. This included rebated meeting stiles (pictured left) for sealing of particular pair doors, core cutouts for vision panels (pictured middle) for visibility between spaces, and frame preparation for electrical strikes. Common hardware such as Door Closers were also fitted in a variety of configurations as door leafs accounted for face-mounting, recessed fitting, and even bottom-of-door fitting.

Measures were taken to protect door leafs against the risk of damage. High-risk and high-traffic doors were finished with a high-pressure laminate composed to protect against scratches and impact damage. Certain doors also featured PVC Edge Strips (pictured right) along their vertical edges as a further protectant against damage from the likes of slamming. These Edge Strips also safeguard the laminated face from peeling at its edges over the course of time.

Inside & Out

Spence handled the supply of particular external door sets. These are specially built for outdoor conditions and the exposure to moisture that this comes with. Ply doors skins were fitted for their natural moisture-resistant properties that deter warping and deformation.

The entry door to the switchroom (pictured right) was metal clad and capped for complete protection. An unsheltered door such as this is subject to climate conditions give its direct exposure to the rain and sun. Capping the door closes off all its exposed components to entirely encase the door leaf against external elements. This provides suitable protection of the door’s internal components to withstand the elements over the long term. The rear entry door (pictured bottom) was fitted with kick plates along the bottom section of the doors' faces. This plating is an effective measure against impact risk to extend the lifespan of the door's functionality as well as deter visual degradation.

A Specialty Build

Many of the building's doors were installed with anti-ligature hinges (pictured left) for the protection of occupants. These doors were constructed to the requisite thickness to fit these hinges and side-of-door preparations made accordingly. The facility also features non-standard swing function door sets. The central toilet/bathroom door (pictured right) was fitted with a double-action pivot door with all preparations completed by Spence for the non-standard pivot hinge to be installed. These non-standard door functions and hardware fittings are indicative of the specialty healthcare requirements with which we are experienced.

A Community Project

The addition of the Heidelberg Youth Prevention and Recovery Care is instrumental in providing necessary youth services. It is rewarding for us at Spence Doors to have played a role alongside SJ Higgins in the construction of such a project. The range of specialty hardware preparations and protective measures required made for a highly custom doors package for us to accommodate.
