Door Painting Tips

The timeliness of painting and sealing is particularly important for veneered door leafs. Do not leave doors in their raw state on site. Failure to seal doors promptly or correctly may invalidate their warranty.

Complete and continuous coating protection is important, as humidity can cause the deterioration of untreated doors. To seal the surfaces on doors, a quick-drying primer/undercoat is recommended. Light sanding with fine paper between coats removes grain-raise and further enhances the final finish. A minimum of two coats of final finishing paint is recommended.

Ensure Australian Standard AS1909 is followed, particularly for external doors to ensure durability. For External doors only light colored paints should be used to minimise heat absorption.

The use of high gloss paints may highlight door component show through which is allowed under AS1908.

Tip

Vision panel beadings on 60-minute rated doors are backed with a ceramic insulating tape which will readily take up any paint applied to it. We recommend close attention to masking to protect the ceramic tape, and avoid heavy application of paint to the beading adjacent to the glass.

Warranty / Durability 

• Any penetrations/cutouts added to the door must be sealed 

• All door hardware must be installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure weather tightness is achieved.

Failure to observe any of these instructions will void the product warranty and compromise product durability.
